| The Ruler is based on two passages of Scripture which record such important instructions from Jesus that they have come to be known as the Great Commandments (Matt 22:37-40) and the Great Commission (Matt 28:18-20). | ![]() |
• We are called, both individually and
corporately, into a real and intimate love relationship with God.
• We are called to loving relationships with each other.
• We are called to reach out in love to the people around us.
His command creates our goal! The Relationship part of this image is a reminder that relationship, with God, with each other and with those around us, is the absolute priority. The Ruler part of this image is a reminder to keep focussed on the goal. As we make plans and decisions we can "hold the ruler" along side those ideas to see if they fit.
In 2007 we introduced a second picture, the Spiral. The spiral draws attention to the same three relationships – our relationship with God, with each other and with those around us.
The “loving, encouraging, and serving” draw attention to our primary stance in those three relationships. Our relationship with God is to be marked by whole hearted love. Our relationship with each other is to be marked by encouragement – urging each one to be all they can be. Our primary stance to the people around us is to be one of loving service.

The spiral shape draws attention to way these three goals are inter-connected. As we draw closer to God we find ourselves connected with fellow believers. As we draw closer to God we find ourselves caring more for the world. It also commonly happens that when we connect with God’s people we find ourselves getting closer to God. As we get closer to God’s people we find ourselves serving others too. And it is also true that in the midst of stepping out in loving service we find ourselves closer to God and develop a deeper connection to His people. So it may not really matter where we start. As we, individually and corporately, make any step to draw closer to God, or to encourage our fellow believers, or to reach out to those around us in loving service, we find ourselves moving forward in all these central goals. |
